Literally translated as “the beautiful era,” Paris’ belle époque was a golden age of cultural and economic growth between the horrors of the Napoleonic Wars and World War I. At the end of the nineteenth century, against the backdrop of Baron Haussmann’s magnificent civic plan, Paris was alive with new ideas, luminous art and dazzling music.  

Celebrating this “golden age,” New Texas Sinfonia opens its fifth season with musical riches of the Parisian salon and stage from the turn of the nineteenth century. In Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, harpist Margaret Davis showcases the expressive possibilities of the double-action pedal harp, newly developed in the early twentieth century. This nod to the great “City of Light” finishes with the virtuosic flair of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso performed by highly acclaimed violinist Mann-Wen Lo.

New Texas Sinfonia concludes the season with a visit to Italy! Felix Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony, commonly known as the Italian, captures the ebullience and richness of Italy as experienced by the composer during his tour of Europe from 1829 to 1831. He wrote to his sister Fanny, “The Italian symphony is making great progress. It will be the jolliest piece I have ever done, especially the last movement.” 

If that isn’t enough to sweep you off your feet, the program also features Alfredo Casella’s Concerto Romano for organ & orchestra, celebrating 25 years of East Texas’ largest pipe organ. With playing described by Classical Voice of North Carolina as “simply first class,” Bryan Anderson joins the orchestra for a rarely heard, yet grand, Italian concerto.

British vicar and author William Lawson wrote in 1618 that a garden “makes all our senses swim in pleasure and that with infinite variety.” With English composers Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, John Ireland and Gerald Finzi as our guides, New Texas Sinfonia presents an abundance of musical charm in great variety with this concert for string orchestra.

An early personal success for Elgar, the Serenade for String Orchestra is an enduring work, now one of his most popular compositions. He wrote to a friend stating "I like 'em (the first thing I ever did).” Many of the pieces on this program take inspiration from the pastoral beauty of the English countryside and have garnered the praise and delight of audiences ever since.

Recipient of the Distinguished Gold Medal at the 2023 Virtuoso Artists Festival hosted by the Seattle International Piano Festival and First Prize in the 2022 International Clara Schumann Competition, consonari was founded in 2019 by violinist Anna Larson and pianist Kaden Larson. They are passionate about a vast array of repertoire from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, especially of lesser-known and under-represented composers.

At the heart of the program stands Mythes by Polish composer Karol Szymanowski, consisting of three brief tone poems inspired by Greek mythology. The musical storytelling continues with alluring pieces by Rebecca Clarke, Sergei Prokofiev and Florence Price, concluding with American composer George Gianopoulos’ City Vignettes.

Join Dean Emeritus of Canterbury Cathedral Robert Willis for an afternoon of ecumenical discussion and reflection on his life of work in the church. A theologian, hymn-writer, and pastor, Robert Willis served as Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, from 2001-2022. During this time he advised three archbishops, government, and the crown, as well as running The King’s School, Canterbury (the world’s oldest school, founded by St Augustine in 597). He is a frequent visitor of Texas, but is delighted to be visiting Tyler for the first time. Tea and light refreshments to be served.

Over four decades of performance and a catalogue of award-winning recordings for Gimell, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars have done more than any other group to establish sacred vocal music of the Renaissance as one of the great repertoires of Western classical music.

They have sought to bring Renaissance works to a wider audience in churches, cathedrals and venues on every continent on the planet except Antarctica! These include the Royal Albert Hall, the Sistine Chapel, the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall New York, the Philharmonic Hall Berlin, Saint Mark's Venice, Seoul Arts Centre Korea, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wigmore Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Megaron Athens and the Opera House Sydney.

It is a delight to have them return to Tyler for what promises to be another highlight in the history of this series.

Although commonly referred to as ‘violin sonatas,’ Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin, as he called them, put the violin and piano on equal footing in a way never before heard. This concert features two of his sonatas, namely the 7th and 8th, each capturing the relentless passions of Beethoven’s middle period.

Here to bring these works to life are two of Belgium’s leading young musicians: violinist Jolente de Maeyer and pianist Nikolaas Kende. Praised for their 'symbiotic playing', 'pervasive lyricism' and their 'powerful yet poetic playing', the De Maeyer - Kende duo is being recognized as one of the leading musical duos in Europe.

As principal organist for the daily services and state occasions at Westminster Abbey, including the recent funerals of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, as well as the coronation of King Charles III, Peter Holder has held the post of Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey since October 2017. As a recitalist, he performs in cathedrals and concert halls across the world. Following his BBC Proms solo debut in 2019 performing Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, Ivan Hewett, writing for The Daily Telegraph, remarked that '…it was Peter Holder’s wild organ solo which stole the show.'

Experience musical memories of these iconic British occasions performed on the grand Casavant pipe organ by acclaimed organist Peter Holder.

Don’t miss our annual Fall Festival set for 4-6 p.m., Oct. 29, in the Fellowship Hall.

The event is free to the public and the public is welcome to attend. You do not have to be a member of the congregation to attend.

Join in on the fun by playing the numerous games set up, bounce in the bouncy house and enjoy snacks and of course, there will be CANDY, CANDY, and more CANDY!

Dress in your best costume. The event is open to children up to 18 years of age.

Beginning with the sparkling sound of sleigh bells, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony takes the listener on a grand, sunlit journey from earth to heaven. Unlike his other symphonies, joy, humor and delight run through the work, concluding with a child’s vision of heaven, sung by a solo soprano.
